Greenhouse Gas Neutral

woodlandAs concern over greenhouse gas emissions has increased, a whole host of initiatives have arisen to allow individuals, groups, companies and institutions to mitigate their own greenhouse gas emissions. Some of these take the form of simple advice on how to cut greenhouse gas emissions through lower energy use, more recycling etc. and many of these are represented on the Web Links page.

However, there also exist a range of sites where you, your community, or your employer, can calculate your greenhouse gas emissions and then offset them through a variety of ways, such as paying for the planting of trees or funding energy efficiency schemes.

Here I have listed some of the schemes I am currently aware of:

  • Climate Care This excellent site provides a wide-ranging list of products and services that come with 'Climate Care' - designed to minimize or neutralize their climate change impact. There are products and services for both individuals and for larger groups, just follow this link to their 'Market Place' page.

  • Climate Friendly Climate Friendly is an Australia-based organization dedicated to positive, meaningful and real actions to improve our global greenhouse situation. Helps both individuals and businesses reduce and offset their greenhouse gas emissions. Excellent set of carbon calculators.

  • Carbon Balanced From the World Land Trust, this site offers carbon off-setting for individuals and business. Also offers advice on cutting your own emissions at home.

  • Carbon Neutral Company This is a UK-based company allowing easy calculation of your greenhouse gas emissions. The easiest way to then off set your emissions is to pay for a tree, or trees, to be planted in one of their forests, either in the UK or in the developing world. You can also opt for sending energy efficient light bulbs to the developing world.

  • GreenChoices GreenChoices encourages everyone in Britain to make ecologically sound decisions in living their everyday lives. They aim to empower individuals with simple, direct information on green alternatives which make a real, lasting difference.

  • Carbon Neutral Conferencing This Canadian site presents some success stories and provides advice on how greenhouse gas emissions from every conference can be reduced.

  • Greenergy Promotes and supplies fuels with low environmental impacts. Have developed a range of biofuels which carry carbon credits.

  • Trees for Travel Based in the Netherlands, allows calculation of greenhouse gas emissions and off setting by tree planting along the same lines as Future Forests.

  • CO2e.com Greenhouse trading website for business. Lots of information of the carbon trading market and on how your own company can get involved.
