“Stationary” fuel cells like the one shown could be fixed in garages, basements or closets, ending reliance on power grids strained by surges in demand due to extreme heat or cold. General Electric plans to start selling its line of cells in 2001. Like fuel cells for cars, these would be much less polluting than diesel generators or electric power plants fired by carbon-heavy coal, such as the Mojave Generating Station in Nevada, at right.
