Notes:
The final bill, both in terms of their lifetimes' GHG emissions and its associated costs is vastly greater for Mr Prescott. Through relatively modest changes in lifestyle, Mr Bellamy succeeded in cutting his total GHG emissions by 70% and saved himself around £80,000 compared to Mr Prescott. It is clear that, if even much smaller reductions are extrapolated to scales of millions of individuals, huge GHG and energy savings are possible on a national and international scale. If 10 million people living like our Pr Prescott were to make GHG cuts of 5 tonnes a year we could achieved a reduction equivalent to 10% of total 1998 CO2 emissions from all UK sources.
Though in these calculations I've obviously skipped over some aspects, such as the initial purchase costs of new 'A' rated fridges versus old 'G' fridges the basic message being greater. However, the basic message remains clear - cutting individual GHG emissions is both relatively easy and cost effective, especially in the long term.
